Sydney, Illawarra and Canberra

Hatching Chicks is a family owned business which has been operating successfully from Canberra to Sydney south and the Illawarra since 2000. Hatching Chicks brings the farm to you, giving you the opportunity to watch a chicken hatching from its shell and growing for the first 12 days of its life.

ACT Schools Animal Ethics

All schools in the Australian Capital Territory must apply to the ACT Schools Animal Ethics Committee to care for or use any animals for educational purposes prior to any animals (or eggs for hatching programs) being acquired. Schools should obtain approval from the ACT Schools Animal Ethics Committee before submitting their order to conduct an egg hatching program. More information can be found in the Care and Use of Animals in ACT Public Schools for Educational Purposes policy and procedures. These documents can be found here. You can submit an application to the ACT Schools Animal Ethics Committee using this form. Please call (02) 6205 1982 or email actsaec@act.gov.au if you have questions about the approval process or the ACT Schools Animal Ethics Committee.

All you have to do is make contact with Hatching Chicks and we’ll do the rest. Hatching Chicks will deliver to your door and once the 12 day program has finished everything will be picked up, including any unwanted chickens.

NSW Animals in Schools

If you wish to purchase some chicks or ducklings at the end of the program you will find that caring for them is immensely satisfying and surprisingly easy. NSW Schools can view the requirements they need to meet by visiting the ANIMALS IN SCHOOLS website.

Your Responsibilities

If you do purchase chicks or ducklings at the end of the program then it is your responsibility to look after them by providing them with adequate feed, shelter and care. Do not buy poultry as a present or reward for your child and do not buy poultry if you just intend to dump them on someone else when they stop being "cute".
